Lucie Decosse O Uchi Gari Study

Lucie Decosse – multiple time European Champ, 3 time world champ, Olympic gold and silver medalist – is the definition of finesse and kuzushi based judo. She's known for her deadly o uchi gari which we will look at today.

Thanks to Christophe Rattana for the video, the translation to English is in the text below.

1st Demonstration:

-Her opponent steps their left foot back and tries to avoid their sleeve being grabbed by Decosse

-Decosse capitalizes on the movement to initiate the o uchi gari

-Her lapel (left) hand pushes her opponent backwards to disturb her opponents balance

-The left foot hooks around the forward leg of her opponent

-Decosse pulls the sleeve towards herself to control her opponents movement

2nd Demonstration

-Her opponent steps their left foot back

-Decosse initiates the o uchi gari

-The left foot hooks around the forward leg of her opponent

-She continues the movement with the lapel hand pushing hard in backwards direction

-She pulls the sleeve towards herself to control or fix her opponents movement (and to ensure she is driving against the weak plane)

-Decosse hops/drives and pushes in the direction of the throw

3rd Demonstration

-Decosse initiates the o uchi gari leg hook at the same time that she gets the lapel grip and pushes backwards

-She hops/drives in the direction of the throw

It only took me a mere 8 years of BJJ and judo to hit this fundamental throw semi-consistently, which by the way, you learn on day 1 of classes.

For those a but rusty on their judo terms, an o uchi gari is to judo as a cross collar choke is to BJJ/ne waza, or a jab is to boxing. In other words completely essential and one of the first things you learn.

Funny how the learning curve is for judo.

If there are any keeners out there, I will give you a big shiny gold star if you can upload this video with subtitles! Also let me know if anything in the translations need fixing, I know it's not perfect.
